Medical billing and medical coding are closely related disciplines that work together to ensure healthcare providers are paid for their services. While they are often discussed together and sometimes performed by the same person, they represent distinct skill sets with different focuses.
Medical coding involves analyzing clinical documentation and translating the diagnoses, procedures, and services documented into standardized alphanumeric codes. The coder must understand medical terminology, anatomy, and disease processes to accurately assign codes that reflect what was documented.
Medical billing uses those codes to create and submit claims, post payments, follow up on denials, and manage the revenue cycle. The biller must understand insurance rules, claim processing requirements, and payment methodologies.

In larger healthcare organizations, coding and billing may be performed by separate departments with specialized staff. In smaller practices, the billing specialist often handles both functions, requiring a broader skill set that encompasses both coding knowledge and billing expertise.
