Understanding Modifiers

Modifiers are two-character codes added to CPT codes to provide additional information about the service performed. They indicate that a service was altered in some way from its standard description without changing the definition of the code itself.

Common uses for modifiers include indicating that a procedure was performed bilaterally, that multiple procedures were performed during the same session, that only a portion of a procedure was performed, or that a service was provided by a different provider than expected.

Some modifiers affect payment (like modifier 50 for bilateral procedures or modifier 51 for multiple procedures), while others are informational only. Understanding when and how to use modifiers correctly is essential for accurate billing and appropriate reimbursement.

Examples of Commonly Used Modifiers

  • 25 (significant, separately identifiable E/M service)
  • 26 (professional component)
  • 50 (bilateral procedure)
  • 59 (distinct procedural service)
  • TC (technical component)

Each modifier has specific rules for when it should be applied.
